Family-of-five’s NYE camping trip ends in horror after man, 27, allegedly smashes car into their tent

A family-of-five were rushed to hospital after a 27-year-old man allegedly crashed into their tent just two hours into the new year.

A man has been taken into custody after he allegedly drove his car through a Tasmanian campsite during the early hours of New Year’s Day and crashed into a family-of-five asleep in a tent.

Tasmania Police said the incident occurred at West Kentish Road Campgrounds, near Devonport, at about 2am on Saturday.

Officers allege the 27-year-old ploughed his car through the tent, which contained two adults and three children sleeping inside.

The man narrowly missed other campers and then smashed into a tree, according to police.

The family-of-five suffered injuries in the ordeal, which range from minor lacerations to suspected internal injuries.

They have been taken to Northwest Regional Hospital for treatment.

“Police have received information that the male was exhibiting anti-social behaviour prior to the crash,” acting Sergeant Fabienne Jamieson said.

“As we continue our investigation into the incident, we seek any information from members of the public who were in the area at the time.”
